Harald had a long-term relationship with a Norwegian commoner, Sonja Haraldsen, in the late fifties and early sixties, but was forbidden by his father from marrying her. In 1968, Harald relented to his father's pressure and gave up Haraldsen. Soon after, Harald's engagement to his second cousin, '''Princess Christina of Sweden''', it was rumored to be an arranged marriage.
