Donatus was born the eldest child and heir of '''Grand Duke Moritz of Hesse''' and '''Princess Tatiana of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg'''.

Donatus was born a Prince of Finland, but his grandfather renounced their Finnish succession rights in 1965 in order to succeed his distant cousin as Grand Duke of Hesse in 1968.

He succeeded his father as Grand Duke upon his death in 2013.

==Marriage and Issue==
