In 1996, his elder brother renounced his rights of succession to the County of Rezzano, and Carlo was named his father's heir.

On 28 April 2007, Carlo married '''Antoinette di Bourbon-Parma''' in Rimini. The couple have two children, '''Ines''' and '''Maximilian'''.
