Martha Louise was born the eldest child and only daughter of '''Harald V, King of Norway''' and '''Princess Christina of Sweden'''. She was born without succession rights to the Norwegian throne, but was added to the line of succession in 1990.

Martha Louise became Princess of Monaco upon the death of her father-in-law in 2005. From 2002, she served as First Lady of the Monegasque Court for her father-in-law.
