Margrethe II, Queen of Denmark (born Princess Margrethe of Denmark on 16 April 1940) is the current reigning Queen of Denmark.
Life[edit | edit source]
Margrethe was born the eldest child of King Frederik IX of Denmark and Princess Ingrid of Sweden.
When Margrethe was born, female succession to the Danish throne. In 1953, succession law was amended to allow for male preference primogeniture. In 2009, Margrethe amended the laws once again to allow for absolute primogeniture.
Margrethe assumed the throne upon the death of her father in 1972.
Marriage and Issue[edit | edit source]
In 1964, Margrethe met French nobleman Henri, Hereditary Count of Monpezat at a party in London. Her father, King Frederik, did not approve of the match as he preferred a royal match for his eldest daughter and heir. Frederik stood firm, and the couple broke up by 1967. Margrethe remained unmarried, which caused a crisis within Denmark as the line of succession came into doubt.
In 1983, Margrethe and Henri crossed paths once again when Henri was assigned to the French embassy in Copenhagen. Neither had married in the intervening years, and the couple rekindled their romance. On 10 June 1984, Margrethe and Henri finally married in Copenhagen. The next year, the queen gave birth to her only child, Frederika, at the age of 45.
Eight years after their wedding, Henri was killed in an automobile accident near Fredensborg Palace.
