Margrethe was born the eldest child of '''King Frederik IX of Denmark''' and '''Princess Ingrid of Sweden'''.

When Margrethe was born, female succession to the Danish throne. In 1953, succession law was amended to allow for male preference primogeniture. In 2009, Margrethe amended the laws once again to allow for absolute primogeniture.
