Alois became Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein upon the death of his grandfather in 1989. Since 2004, Alois has served as Prince Regent of Liechtenstein.

On 3 July 1993, Alois married '''Princess Sophie of Bavaria''' in Vaduz. Alois and Sophie have four children, '''Joseph Wenzel, Marie Caroline, Georg,''' and '''Nikolaus'''.
