Maria was born the only child of Emperor Vladimir of Russia and Princess Leonida of Mukhrani.

With no male issue, in 1983 Emperor Vladimir amended Russian succession to allow for female inheritance and named Maria as the first Tsarevna in her own right.

On 22 September 1976, Maria married Prince Franz Wilhelm of Prussia in Saint Petersburg.

Maria and Franz Wilhelm have lived separately since 1985, but remain married and continue to conduct public duties together.
