He was also a member of the Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach Grand Ducal Family as the brother-in-law of Michael, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.

Bernhard was born the only child of Claus von Amsberg and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
Bernhard became heir to the Dutch throne after the abdication of his grandmother in 1980.
On 17 February 2012, Bernhard was buried under an avalanche in Lech, Austria while on holiday. Several days later, it was announced that the king had suffered extensive brain damage while being buried and after undergoing almost an hour of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
