King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden (born Prince Carl Gustaf of Sweden 14 January 1947-13 July 2026) was the King of Sweden from 1973 until his death in 2026. He was also a member of the British Royal Family as the brother-in-law of James IV, King of the United Kingdom.

Life

Carl Gustaf was born the fifth child and only son of Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Carl Gustaf's father was killed in an airplane crash twelve days after his birth, making the infant heir to the Swedish throne.

Carl Gustaf ascended to the throne upon his grandfather's death in 1973.

In 2022, Carl Gustaf was diagnosed with stage three blood cancer. He underwent chemotherapy from 2022 to 2025, when it was announced that the chemotherapy had stopped working. In April 2026, it was announced that he had undergone CAR T-cell therapy as part of a clinical trial, and was cancer free.

On 13 July 2026, Carl Gustaf died in his sleep at his summer home. A state funeral was held in Stockholm on 24 July 2026.
