Sophie was born the eldest child of Max, Crown Prince of Bavaria and Countess Elisabeth Douglas.
Since 2004, Sophie's husband has served as regent of Liechtenstein. Following her mother-in-law's death in 2021, Sophie became First Lady of the Liechtenstein Court.
In 2023, Bavarian succession law was changed to allow for female succession. Sophie, as the future Princess consort of Liechtenstein, renounced succession rights for herself and her descendants in favor of her younger sister, Princess Marie Caroline of Bavaria.

On 3 July 1993, Sophie married Alois, Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein in Vaduz. Alois and Sophie have four children, Joseph Wenzel, Marie Caroline, Georg, and Nikolaus.
